THE MILLS OF CUMBERLAND VALLEY: A CULTURAL AND BIO-PHYSICAL LEGACY

Location: Cumberland County Historical Society

In conjunction with the Cumberland County Historical Society and the Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau.

Exhibit opening reception at 6:00 pm; talk to follow at 7:00 pm

Small, localized mills had a tremendous impact on shaping European settlement development patterns, and though these structures have largely been forgotten, their legacy is still surprising strong. Historian and author Richard Tritt will give a brief overview of the history of mills in Cumberland County. He will also highlight the Cumberland County Historical Society’s new Mill book publication and discuss how this project evolved. Franklin & Marshall professors Dorothy Merritts and Robert Walter will discuss the only recently discovered manner in which the innumerous historical dams continue to influence the biophysical world – highlighting how the accumulated sediments left behind these dams alter stream dynamics, geomorphology, and floodplain ecology.
