| Pine Grove Furnace Stack Repair |

The Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation served as the fiscal sponsor for the Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park to allow them to undertake a project to repair and install a new concrete cap on the iconic Furnace State at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. The cold-blast charcoal iron industry was central to the South Mountain region’s economy in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the 30-foot tall stone furnace stack (in operation 1764-1895) is emblematic of this legacy. The “throat” of the stack had recently been exposed to the elements, with the plywood and rubber sheeting cover having collapsed; this put the historic landmark in immediate danger of rapid deterioration. The new concrete cap will protect the stack well into the future.
