The Goddard Leadership Legacy Institute launched its inaugural program in July, 2013 with a week-long summer residential program that engaged 20 promising early level high school students in natural resources stewardship learning and training in leadership and civic engagement. Led by environmental educators and incorporating professional leaders in a variety of fields, the program included lessons in ecology and sustainability; leadership and citizen engagement were focused on as tools to resolving threats to sustainability. The week culminated with student-driven team projects that sought to integrate the technical and leadership skills that students had developed over the course of the week

The Goddard Institute takes inspiration from Maurice K. Goddard’s legacy which includes a commitment to professionalism and civil service; leadership on environmental and watershed-scale approaches to water management; and dedicated funding for natural resource conservation.
